Background and the History of Kahawatta Division
Kahawatta is one of the 17 divisions in Ratnapura District, which is most popular for Gems nowadays in Sri Lanka. It consists of 10,205 Hectare Land area, and it is 3.1% of the total district land area. It has also included 21 Grama Niladari divisions.
Even it called as Kahawatta, In past, the "Nugawela division" was the main division in this area. According to the legend, this area was popular for providing "Turmeric" to the ancient Maha Saman Devalaya of Ratnapura. Because of that, this area called as Kahawatta, which means "Turmeric Garden/Turmeric area". Also,Today we can see a village named as "Kahawathu kanda" near to Ketethenna area, which belongs to Saman Devalaya of Ratnapura. In Later, Centering the important locations such as Police Station, Hospital and Village fair in this area, people named Kahawatta to the whole division.
